Why Philly’s Most Prestigious Hotel Invests in a Weekly Live Music Program

Sep. 12, 2017

In 2015, The Rittenhouse Hotel—Philadelphia’s number one hotel and Forbes rated 4 Diamond property—hired Mole Street to produce a weekly program of live music in their lobby bar called The Library Bar. Now a multi-year activation and still running, Jazz at The Rittenhouse Hotel has paid in spades, in the form of increased food & beverage revenue.

So what made The Rittenhouse Hotel make the intro call to Mole Street Artists in the first place to find out about live hotel music? They wanted to explore live music programming as an opportunity to draw more guests into the Library Bar week after week and ultimately increase food and beverage sales.

Jazz at The Rittenhouse Hotel

To keep guests coming back night after night, we put together an eclectic program of jazz artists in varying styles. We booked contemporary R&B/jazz vocalists, traditional 3-piece jazz ensembles, male and female duets, and even mixed in some avant garde takes on pop music. Through live jazz, we created an atmosphere in The Library Bar that was chic and sexy—a tribute to the bar’s star mixologist and the hotel itself.

As a result of the hotel music program, The Library Bar entered into the forefront of people’s minds for artisan cocktails. Tourists and residents were impressed with a rejuvenated space for entertaining. And food revenue increased by 75% and beverage revenue increased by over 20%.

Music Production

With an ongoing hotel music program like the one at The Rittenhouse Hotel, it’s important that the sound and music production is seamless from night to night. We managed the weekly scheduling for The Rittenhouse Hotel and consulted the management team on installing a sound system that was appropriate for the space. The process each week is largely hands-off for The Rittenhouse Hotel staff.

“Mole Street has been an invaluable partner to The Rittenhouse Hotel since 2015. Their professionalism and talent has elevated our guests’ experiences and adds value to our property. They create an atmosphere that tantalizes any passer-by and makes you want to escape into their majestic realm. We are thankful to have Mole Street as part of the Rittenhouse family, and look forward a lasting partnership for years to come.”

Stevie Wonder sits in for Jazz Night!

Fun fact: One evening in November 2016, the man himself—Stevie Wonder—was so impressed by one of our jazz acts, that when he returned to the Rittenhouse Hotel after performing a concert as part of his Songs in the Key of Life Tour, he grabbed an instrument from his room and sat in with husband-wife duet, Shawn Qaissaunee and Sharon Sable!
